Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Working with students with special needs is always rewarding and challenging at the same time. My students not only strive for excellence in their academics, but all of them have put their best foot forward in athletics and their military tasks as well. My students come from low income households, some are homeless, and most have experienced some sort of major trauma throughout their lives. Although they all hide pain and insecurities, they come to school daily with the hopes of earning their high school diplomas.
My Project
Our classes are project-based and include art, music, reading, writing and investigating. My students, all of them with special needs, utilize hands-on activities, word walls, storyboards, dioramas, and more to help them understand what they read. Having a supply of materials such as Kleenex, highlighters, books, and pencils available to them, they can work to their strengths. Also, having books with characters, fictional and non-fictional, that are relatable to my students will peak their interest in reading, which at times is very difficult for them. They want to learn and need supplies to assist in their education.
