Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Participating in class can be an intimidating experience. When I was in middle school, I often feared giving a wrong answer, and was reluctant to raise my hand. Even when I was confident about the answer, sometimes I was intimidated to raise my hand because of the automatic spotlight it put on me.
In my first year of teaching 8th grade social studies, I struggled to make my students feel comfortable participating and raising their hand in class. With some students I was very successful and they were eager to participate after every question. I had other students, however, who never participated. Even when called on they were reluctant to express their opinion.
Recently I observed an excellent technique used to encourage participation. I observed a class in which every student had a miniature dry-erase board and marker in their desk. After a question was asked, students had the opportunity to write down answers on their dry-erase board and hold them up in the air, so other students could observe. When everyone was participating, no one was worried about giving a wrong answer or being in the spotlight.
If my proposal is funded, you will help provide my 135 8th grade students with an easy outlet for participation by providing 35 mini dry-erase boards with markers. When teaching history, I have found that the best learning occurs when students share their ideas and opinions. These boards will enable students to participate without worry and allow students to show off what they know.
On behalf of my students and myself, thank you for considering my proposal.
