My Students
Our suburban high school serves an economically diverse population. The majority of students in my College in High School Spanish 4 course have been learning Spanish since Kindergarten and many look forward to continuing to AP Spanish next year.
The students enjoy exploring a variety of themes tied to the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.
They've enjoyed connecting with pen pals in Spain and Ecuador to make connections with their peers and students make comparisons between our culture and the cultures of the areas we study. So far, the lifestyles of their pen pals have been similar to their own. I'd like to expose them to the challenges faced by some of their peers in other areas.
My Project
Second Language Literacy
With a subscription for a class set of the student magazine EL SOL, my students will become informed about current topics related to the Spanish-speaking world while they increase their reading comprehension.
Each issue will provide multiple days of use, and back issues will be available for students to peruse during free time.
I've used these magazines in the past and the students have always been very excited to get their hands on a resource that is not a book or a worksheet. The extension activities provided in the teacher's manual for each issue are very helpful as well.
