Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How can I engage my students and maximize the time that I have with them? My students live in an age of video games, iPods, and 3D movies, and I am using a duct-taped overhead projector to get them to focus on important information.
The majority of the students at my school have a Hispanic or Latino ethnicity (93%) and 6% of the students are African Americans.
Though many parents prioritize their children's education, their own lack of education, time, and resources make it difficult for them to provide the necessary academic support. 100% of the students receive free lunch and breakfast at school.
The students at my school begin their education with a desire to be successful. As they progress through the grades, many of them become accustomed to failure and ineffective instruction. School becomes irrelevant and unpleasant. Some families feel like victims to public education and are frustrated by its effects on the children in the community.
My Project
An Elmo Visual Presenter will allow me to easily guide my students through books and lessons while engaging and focusing them. It will also maximize my time because my students will be able to easily see what my instructions entail. Many students have a difficult time following lessons and instructions. The Elmo will give me the opportunity to use the books and notebooks that they are working in to clarify material. I will also be able to model good note-taking and organizational skills that will prepare them for higher education.
Using an overhead projector to teach makes me dependent on buying and making transparencies, while also trying to use an inconsistent and busy copy machine. It also limits what I am able to present to my entire class of at least 30 students. An Elmo Visual Presenter will update my classroom and allow me to display literature, art, activities, student work, and any other resource that will improve the education of my students.
Not only would the technology of the Elmo Visual Presenter benefit the education of my students, but it would also improve their sense of worth and hopefully their motivation to learn.
It will be evident that they have a teacher who is willing to work hard to meet their needs and that there are strangers who care deeply about their academic success.
