I teach students with autism, all of whom have trouble talking. Some do not talk at all. They all, however, have average to above average intelligence which can cause a lot of frustration and makes learning even basic skills very difficult. The materials I am requesting will be used by all of my students throughout every aspect of the school day. Materials can be laminated and used over and over again for years to come, helping to reach many students. Most of the materials requested will be used to make picture symbol cards and labels. They will help make simple drawings that illustrate almost any word or phrase that a student will ever need to communicate. The students use the cards to ask for items, make requests, and express wants and needs. Many students who communicate through symbols eventually learn how to talk. Students with minimal language already often learn to use complete sentences or even hold conversations. The materials will also be used to add picture symbols to story books so that the students can "read" the story. They will be used to help the students demonstrate understanding and comprehension. Instead of telling me the story was about a dog they can select a picture of a dog from a group of pictures. These materials will not just help enhance a unit or make a lesson more interesting. They will help give the children in my class a voice that will last them a lifetime.
