My students are from a small community in Jackson County, Ky. where over 30% of our families are considered below the poverty level.
These students range from ages fourteen to eighteen and are considering a career in the military.
When students join the (JROTC) Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, they are then referred to as cadets. Cadets start out as being called "fuzzies", which means at the time they have no rank. They are able to advance through the ranks as in any military profession by showing hard work and dedication to the program.
My Project
The JROTC military ball is an annual formal function that is planned, decorated, and attended by the cadets enrolled in JROTC. Military personnel and male cadets dress in formal uniforms and female cadets may wear a formal dress.
Most teenagers never have the opportunity to experience a formal dining situation.
Cadets are required to take an etiquette class before attending the dinner. I'm requesting place card holders, table covers, plastic silverware, and dessert plates.
Cadets use the place card holders to learn seating charts and how to properly seat themselves and their guests. Cadets are responsible for their actions and also the actions of their guest, which includes how to properly place and use their cutlery. After dinner, dessert is served to each individual on separate dessert plates to celebrate the yearly accomplishments. This gives them an insight as to what to expect whenever they join the military.
The JROTC program has the purpose of "motivating young people to become better citizens". It is arguably one of the best programs offered in high school. The JROTC military ball offers benefits in the fact that it is a “different” approach to learning, which cultivates citizenship, leadership, and numerous other important qualities.
Your funding would be greatly appreciated so that my cadets may enjoy a night of elegant dining and decorations while learning how to conduct themselves in the appropriate manner. We feel that these items would help make this dinner a more pleasurable experience.
