Ms. Temple from Los Angeles CA is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students the ability to use real life problems to learn math. In the primary grades, math is all about building strong number sense. This curriculum provides everything they need.
"We do no inherit the Earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children" -Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Our school is particularly unique in the sense that it is highly diverse, ethnically, religiously, socioeconomically, as well as a huge range of ability level (physical and intellectual).
This has lead to a school culture that focuses on acceptance, one that truly honors the richness our unique community has to offer. My school is also a Title I school. This means that 75% or more of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program. My students are some of the most exciting kids I have met. They are eager to learn new things and excited to learn with one another. They are extremely creative thinkers, have questions about everything, and want to express themselves. Many of my students are particularly interested in the natural world and the way that it works. First graders care deeply about plants and animals and are shocked to find out the damage that single use plastics do to their beloved animals and plants.
I am asking for the Context For Learning curriculum after talking to several university professors who recommend this as one of the best tools for teaching number sense to primary students.
My class is a very student centered, inquiry driven classroom.
I use CGI principles for teaching math. This is a way in which we honor student's inherent mathematical knowledge and learn to share strategies. We are then able to put names to the strategies and through practice we learn which strategies are more efficient and effective. This kind of mathematical teaching helps to raise deep number sense in students.
The primary grades are all about building strong number sense.
Context for learning gives students the chance to do this type of math trough story based problems. Not only does it bring engagement up, but also deepens their mathematical thinking. Context for Learning is extremely Common Core Aligned. My students will benefit from this curriculum and I will be able to sharpen my own practice as a math teacher.
