My students attend a Title I school with limited resources. Most come from tough home lives and school is where they go to get away from the stress of their family and homes. I teach 6th grade students who are either in an ESOL class or special education students with varying needs. My students are reluctant readers and I'm hoping that providing them with interesting text will give them a love of literature and reading and improve the overall literacy in my classroom.
My students are book-loving, avid readers, and enthusiastic learners.
Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. As English language learners, books are so important to my students and are truly valued. My classroom library is an essential resource for my students. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our classroom library to check out high-quality books. Each day students inquire when the newest books by their favorite authors will be added to the library and if they can be first to check out these books. There is a buzz about books and an excitement for reading in my classroom.
My Project
After reading several books this summer, I want to challenge my students to a 40 book challenge. Many teachers have implemented this and seen amazing growth with their children's reading and comprehension skills. I am hopeful that a new classroom library would excite my students and get them geared up to read!
I chose these specific books based on various genres such as traditional literature, realistic fiction (The Schwa was Here), historical fiction (The Chocolate War) and fantasy.
I want to expose my students to a wide variety of titles and let them explore different genres to find their true passion when it comes to reading.
