Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is one of self-esteem, discovery, thinking outside of the box, and reaching beyond what anyone thought was possible for my students. I have a fifth grade inclusion class in a low-income, high poverty neighborhood.
Half of my students have some form of learning disability but, I don't see that.
Each and every one of my students has the ability, and desire, to reach for more. For some of them, school is the most stable environment they have, with the adults as their "parents". I strive to provide not just a classroom with multiple learning paths, but a family setting in which they feel safe, loved, and wanted.
My Project
Even though only eight of my students have learning disabilities, all of my students need/deserve to work with hands on manipulatives. When math is taught with manipulatives, and the students are able to construct and deconstruct their math concepts, they gain more knowledge. Due to our school is a Title One school, we do not have extra funds to supply each student with their own set of manipulatives.
When teaching any math skill, especially fractions, having a tool such as cuisinaire rods will help each student to visually compare equivalent fractions.
Having the students to be able to visually, and physically, work the fractions will enable all students to learn at the next level.
