Teacher Professional Development: I need to attend the National PE Institute to enable me to bring fresh and exciting teaching content and ideas back to my students and fellow colleagues. <profdevpilot>
My classroom goal when teaching PE is for my students to "Find their Fun" - to discover the activities that bring them the joy, confidence, health, fitness, well being, and motivation to lead a healthy active lifestyle while at school and beyond. One thing is for sure-there is never a dull moment in PE!
I have been teaching for 18 years and I am truly passionate about Physical Education - I am always looking to improve my teaching and look for new ways to deliver engaging lessons for my students.
Teaching high school students is especially important because it's the last chance my students have to learn the knowledge and develop the tools they need to be active in their adult lives. In a school of 1400 students, offering a diverse PE curriculum that meets the needs and interests of all of our students is a challenge I continually work hard to meet.
I have been recognized as the 2013 Midwest SHAPE America High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year and I am a National Board Certified Teacher. My masters focused on the importance of increasing physical activity levels in adolescence. I have served my state organization for PE as President and I have presented numerous times at state and national conferences. I am a Google Certified Teacher who uses technology to enhance student learning.
My Project
Attending the National PE Institute will bring me up to date on the most current and effective practices in Physical Education, all of which I can bring back and use in my program to benefit my students. I also plan to share what I have learned within my state with both my colleagues and teachers within my state. I will learn about the latest research into assessment, technology, pedagogy, curriculum, and instructional methods.
I will use what I learn at the National PE Institute to review my curriculum, instructional practice, and assessments to ensure they are inline with current best practices. This summer institute will give me ample time to make adjustments ahead of the 2015-16 school year. My ultimate goal is to enhance student learning - the more I learn about best practices and how I can apply these to my teaching, the more my students will benefit.
By supporting this project you will help the 1400 students in my school receive the excellent physical education teaching they deserve.
In addition, through sharing the knowledge I gain at this National PE Institute with my colleagues and fellow physical educators throughout the state, many more students will benefit.
