Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are not perfect little angels. Most of them have had a tough life and, for that reason, carry with them a load of issues that they have to deal with.
I work at a small alternative high school that focuses on building relationships with these students and helping to equip them with skills and wisdom that will enable them to become successful, mature adults.
Many of our students that come in with trust issues and a giant chip on their shoulder end up not wanting to leave at the end of their high school career due to the relationships that they have built here with the staff.
My Project
At our alternative high school we do not have a sports program or PE classes (students get PE credit through an online program). However, we do have the opportunity twice per school year to play in a softball tournament with all of the other alternative high schools in the area. We are requesting some ball gloves to be able to participate in a tournament.
Last year was the first time we participated in this and we had a couple of students that went into the outfield without a glove on.
We do not need to have the best, most expensive equipment out there. Just some equipment that can get the job done and to have my students feel like they are a real team!
