Mr. Melton from Grenada MS is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need these items so that they can begin to use CAD software (which we already have) to design their own future, and with the 3D printer they can see their designs actually created!

Hello! I teach 7th and 8th grade science as well as Project Lead The Way Automation and Robotics, Medical Detectives, and Design and Modeling. These students are very enthusiastic and excited about taking the advanced classes that my school is offering this year. We are in a low socioeconomic area. Most of our students receive free or reduced lunches, and we are a Title I school.
The majority of the students I teach are from single parent homes, and they do not have access to the basic technology that a lot of people take for granted.
I would love to flood my classroom with some basic technology so that they can see that there is more to life than what they know around their homes. I want my classroom to be a place where anything they imagine is at their fingertips and they can research a better place!
My students currently take a class where they use CAD software to design puzzles, cups, and toys. These are just designs on a screen though.
With a 3D printer they will actually be able to see their designs created, to be able to hold something in their hands that they can say "I made that!" I am in hopes that this will help them understand that anything is possible, and they don't have to stay in our town for the rest of their lives, they can do anything.
We have read stories about how companies are using 3D scanners to duplicate items, down to the finest detail. Sadly, a 3D scanner is very expensive, but one of the students researched and found that you can take an old XBox Kinect sensor and turn it into a fully functioning 3D scanner! These kids would love to be able to use a piece of technology and see how it could help them in the future.
We have lots of Chromebooks at our school. These work great for some of our lower power activities, but to use the scanner and 3D printer we need something with a little more power to it. This simple laptop should work wonderful to help the students complete their lessons, build their designs, and see their creativity come to life!
