My senior Engineering Design and Development students are hard-working and competitive. Most are interested in pursuing STEM careers, like engineering, medicine, nursing, psychology, and more. But whatever they plan to pursue, they are thriving in the Project Lead the Way program at our school. For the past three years they've learned basic engineering principles and this year they are applying what they learned as they research and prepare original designs for products that will solve problems they've identified.
More than three‑quarters of our school's students are from low‑income households.
The opportunity to get this real-world experience of solving a problem and managing a project so early in their lives is a real education and a real struggle. The students are learning through alot of trial and error and through failures and successes. But they are excited about learning and many of them come to our lab on their own time to work on their projects.
My Project
In this capstone class of our Engineering program students teams practice solving problems by desiging, building and testing original prototypes. Many of their prototypes require arduinos and arduino compatible sensors and actuators. We have some basic items, but we need to build up our inventory so that they have more components to learn and explore with as well as to use in their project designs. Some of the items we need for current projects are flowmeters, solenoid valves, vibration motors, pulse sensors, etc... In addition some students need to 3D print specialized parts and we need filament.
These parts will help our students to explore and learn more about digital electronics and allow them to use electronics to build prototypes for solving real world problems.
They'll be able to reuse these components from year to year for other applications and they'll become an investment in our capstone class for the future. Having the right components will truly allow the students to experiment, learn more and finally see their designs in action.
