My students need chairs that will allow them to move while staying in their assigned place. Ball chairs will allow students to rock or bounce during class.
"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms... it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." Tom Hunter, NAEYC. Students are asked to sit still for 7 hours a day! I can't even do that so I can't ask it of my students.
My students are busy, curious and incredibly funny.
I'm always excited to see them. They teach me more than I teach them. They have experienced so many hardships in a very short time. Rural southern Oregon is deeply affected by the changing timber industry. Many of my students parents are unemployed or underemployed. Others have been injured on the job. All of these factors create enormous financial stress for these families. Sadly, other students have been affected by trauma in their lives. Children with disabilities are far more likely to be victims of abuse. Parents may not have the skills to cope with the challenges of a child with special needs or to advocate for their child. Drug use is rampant and we have some of the highest rates of drug abuse nationwide. Our students were also greatly affected by a recent school shooting locally. Throughout all of these challenges, my students show up with a sense of wonder and remarkable resiliency. I'm amazed daily by their strength!
My Project
My students will use the ball chairs in my special education classroom as well as in their general education classes. The ball chairs will allow students to be in their assigned seats and still move when needed. Purchasing ten chairs (five large and five small) will allow multiple students to benefit throughout the school.
Studies show movement reinforces learning retention.
For some of my students, it is essential for their success. It will allow students to be successful in class and reduce behavior challenges as students have their needs met. The ball chairs will allow students to be in classes with their peers rather than being sent out of the classroom because they can't stay in their chairs. Your generous donation will make a meaningful and lasting difference for my students. Thank you!
