Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a bicycle repair & refurbishing class. Students learn the history of bicycles, the scientific principles of a bicycle and also how to repair and refurbish a bicycle. Bicycle are donated to the school in poor and used condition, and the students use their skills creatively to recycle these bicycles to brand new. We focus on implementing scientific theories and mathematical measurements, such as, “What are the negative effects that friction can have on moving metal objects that make contact?"
Our school is a Career and Technical Education high school in Brooklyn New York.
Most students come from impoverished neighborhoods all over the city; our population is 90% Title I. The students travel far and wide to get here, some with the use of their bicycles and others with the use of public transportation. Despite their treacherous journeys every day, they still come in to my classroom eager to learn and work on their bicycles. They have taken ownership of these bicycles because to some of them, it's all they have, and they have taken pride in their work. As a teacher it gives me a great feeling to work with these students and lead them to a career path were they can use the hands-on skills that I have taught them. The main goal of the students is that they will refurbish a bicycle and be able to keep it.
My Project
Due to city-wide budget cuts to career and technical education, we have limited funding and it makes it difficult for the students to be creative. The tools that are being requested will help the students work more efficiently. The various tools and bicycles stands that we are requesting can help them increase production. Right now we are limited and there are simply not enough tools to go around. Also the students will be able to follow the instructor during a hands-on portion of a lesson if they have their own individual tools. The bicycle repair program at our High School provides a positive experience for at-risk urban teenagers. The bicycle repair program will also be hosted as an extra curricular club after school. This will help keep the students in a positive and safe environment and motivated to continue learning. We are also looking to expand our bicycle repair program to help our neighborhood by repairing bicycles for the residents of our community.
This project is crucial in learning about bicycle repair.
The supplies that are being requested will improve classroom operation for multiple reasons. Adding extra tools to our tool box will help us save precious classroom time, because the students won't have to wait for tools to become available before they can use it. Also, due to a high volume of students in each class we do not have enough bicycle stands; this reduces efficiency while fixing the bicycles.
