I'm an Intervention Teacher in a Title 1 school. I work with students in grades K-5 who are just a step away from being tested for a learning disability. They have been given strategies by the classroom teacher to help them be successful but have still shown little to no growth even with these strategies. This is the point when they come to work with me
My role is to provide intensive intervention to small groups of students and teach them on their instructional level (different from grade level content that the classroom teacher does) in order to close the gaps that they have.
If the intense interventions I implement still don't help the students grow then we look to see if there is a disability. Research has shown that most students can show growth with the right support and intervention. Most students aren't learning disabled they just need more support.
I'm being trained in a research-based reading program this year that I think my students will love doing and will help them to become more confident readers. They love working with technology and I'm hopeful that I will be able to get the tools I need in order to help them.
My Project
This year I'm being trained in a research-based reading program to help students become more confident and successful readers. This program is technology based and runs through an app which is why my students need the iPads. They are crucial to the success of my students. The program focuses on a multisensory structured language approach to reading. These skills include: phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension.
Students love technology and incorporating it into their learning makes it easier for struggling students to be motivated to be successful.
My hope is that I will be able to teach my students strategies that will help them improve and gain confidence in reading.
