This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 5th and 6th grade students are family. Some of them have been with me since the 3rd grade. I look forward to greeting them each morning and sharing my day with them. To some, they might appear brash, tough and street-wise. If you pull back the curtain, you will find bright, inquisitive, caring and sensitive people. They are eager to learn new things and learn about their world. Like most children, they also eagerly embrace technology.
My Project
I currently teach 5th grade mathematics online. Students find it difficult to use online digital tools to show or demonstrate their learning. Most of these tools are not designed for math instruction. I find that students are starting to rely and use calculators more often because it is easier to just enter an answer instead of showing their work. They are not developing their conceptual knowledge of mathematics through modelling and solving computations. Providing them with a digital writing tablet will allow them to perform these critical math operations without the added frustration. Our entire class is currently online remotely, but we will return to a blended model soon. The digital tablets requested in this proposal will help to equip students who will not return to the classroom to easily participate in class while online.
