The heart of my classroom is my students. Every day I have the privilege of sneaking a peek into the future by working with future doctors, lawyers, presidents, artists, chefs, and homemakers. I get to work with tomorrow’s legends on the baseball, soccer, and football fields, too!
My incredibly talented and smart students are in grades K-2, speak several languages, and represent the diversity in our country.
They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, German, and Chinese. Some of my students traveled on foot with their parents from different regions in Central America in order to attend school in the United States. I also get to work with students needing literacy intervention and enrichment services.
I see students in 45 minute-1 hour groups during pull-out intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI and ESL classes. I have also started an after school Drama Club for my students. They love learning to read, engaging in STEM activities, and showing their creativity like many of the famous artists we study. More time spent engaged with enjoyable literacy tasks that are matched to their individual learning needs is key to their academic and personal success.
My Project
I am integrating art to help my ESL and Enrichment Kindergarteners learn foundational literacy skills. This project will provide my students access to children's books focusing on color. The books in this project are not available in our school library and are not common in most of our classrooms. Some of these books, like I Feel Teal, are recent releases that my students will get to experience for the first time. Since I work in a Title I school, most of our families do not have the resources to replace items damaged in school. The art smocks will help my students keep their clothes clean while we use art materials to explore color through the use of different art materials. This will help me provide my students literacy interventions that are engaging and extend their learning.
