Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten at a public school in urban LA County. I have 26 lively, 5 year olds. My kindergarten students come from various socioeconomic levels, various ethnicities. Some are English language learners and some are students with special needs. Many receive free or reduced lunch. All are excited about being in Kindergarten. For some this is their very first time in school as they have never been to preschool. All are excited to learn and be at school each day.
My Project
The majority of my Kindergarteners have never seen a wild animal up close. There are a few reasons for this. The main reason being we live in LA County and there are not a lot of wild animals around. The second reason being that going to a zoo or the wild animal park requires time to travel and extra money. Many of my student's families do not have either. My students love reading stories about animals, watching videos with animals and get super excited when they see a squirrel or a bird outside.
I want to give my students the opportunity to hold, look at and use their imaginations with collections of small, plastic dramatic play animals and a play carpet showing different habitats.
I bought a few animals from the dollar store and they LOVE using their imaginations and playing with these during Science. In fact, they are their favorite things to use and they have given names to all of the animals.
Having a play carpet that shows different habitats as well as these collections of animals would be perfect for hands on, imaginative play during our cooperative group time. Thank you for helping our class!
