I am a Kindergarten teacher in a mostly Hispanic, lower income neighborhood in Chicago. Many of the 27 students that enter my classroom each year have learned their English by watching television. They come to school each day eager to learn something new and to practice what they have learned.
Because I am a Kindergarten teacher, students come to me at all levels of reading readiness. Some have never held a book before and some are already starting to read on their own. During Guided Reading and Literacy Center time, I encourage students to pick out a "Just Right" book to read to themselves or a friend as a Learning Center while I am working with small groups. This can be a frustrating and difficult task for many of my lower students because they are simply not developmentally ready to sit down with a book and read it to themselves or a friend.
My students need something that can help them reinforce language, reading, and writing skills that they learn throughout the year. My lower students need help with their letter sounds, letter writing, and vocabulary development. My higher students need something that challenges them and gives them an extra "push" into spelling, fluency, and vocabulary development.
A friend of mine has a son in first grade who struggled with reading last year and in the beginning of this year. Someone gave him a Leap Frog LeapPad PLT for Christmas and my friend cannot say enough praise for what it has done for her son's confidence and reading ability. Now he can sit down and read a book by himself, not even realizing that he is learning. This sounds like the perfect solution for my classroom!!
Thank you for taking the time to consider this proposal. My students will benefit greatly from your generosity.
