My students need the most basic of supplies to ensure they are able to succeed; Paper, Pencils, markers and headphones for testing..all 21st century materials essential for learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a high poverty/low-income school, our students struggle to meet the basic needs of every day life. At times, school is not a priority let alone school supplies. Yet we still have some of the most eager minds in our area show up everyday, ready and eager to learn. Our kids do their best with what they are given and I just want to try make sure they have the resources they need to be successful
We serve a population of 98% Free/Reduced lunch, high transiency and yet have the hungriest minds I have ever encountered, they just need the supplies to feed their hunger.
This drive that they have is exceptional. Over the past two years, learning gains have grown, proficiency has increased and attendance sky rocketed. Our students may not have been dealt the best hand in line to start, but myself, my colleagues and school are determined to make sure they have the skills and knowledge to make a better life for themselves.
My Project
The materials will help our most struggling students, who cannot always bring their own supplies, to soar to success. Some of these materials are directly essential to the students being able to consistently take notes, work out problems and engage in learning. Not all learning takes place in the classroom though, the materials would allow students to take home portions when needed to ensure homework is done, projects are completed and authentic learning is taking place.
A pencil in every hand, paper in every notebook, a marker in every bag, these are the tools my students need to succeed.
The materials needed will help these very needy students bridge the gap between our most needy and our still needy student population. Without the tools we need, we can't make their lives better and our society greater.
