Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be teaching first grade at Cureton, Alum Rock Elementary School District in the fall of 2006. The carpet in the classroom is very old. I have used duct tape to make straight rows on the carpet of the language arts area so my students could sit nicely in assigned and straight rows. The language arts area is used for activities such as storytelling, class reading, phonics and phonemic awareness. Some of my former students complained about their back aching when they sat for about twenty minutes on the floor with the old carpet. This made some of my students reluctant to sit on the floor.
Most of my students are English Language Learners and from a low social economy family. My former first grade students loved to sit on the floor to share their reading with me and their partners. They were so happy and excited whenever I was reading stories aloud to them. They would enjoy learning and reading while sitting on the floor if the carpet were comfortable.
By providing a comfortable carpet, my first grade students will be able to sit comfortably for the longer period. This would help the students to focus more on the lesson and less on how uncomfortable the floor is. I am sure that my first grade students will be excited to sit and be ready for learning new words, class reading, storytelling, and other activities. The bottom line is this comfortable, bold rhyming print and picture carpet would help my students focus and learn more everyday. The carpet is 9 feet by 20 feet has twenty colorful squares that each feature two simple words and a cute matching picture. I usually have about twenty students each school year which would provide a square on the carpet for each of them to sit on.
This is more than just a resource for a one-time project. The rhyming words activity carpet would help my teaching and the students learning in an exciting way. The comfortable and colorful carpet is also included a guide full of skill building activities that focus on rhyme and phonemic awareness. The carpet would be for all of my first grade students and would last for many years. I hope you will consider supporting this need for my students and my future students.
