Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many people readily say they are "visual learners." My students feel that way more than most, but they don't always have materials printed out to support their visual learning!
I am a special education teacher at a specialized middle school for students with disabilities in a high-poverty area in New York City.
My students are 11- to 14-years-old, all with moderate to severe forms of autism and intellectual, emotional, and physical disabilities. They are wonderful, hard-working students who deserve the best tools to help them succeed.
My Project
Many of my students are nonverbal or have limited communication skills. Moreover, regardless of their communication skills, cognition and thinking abstractly are skills that are so difficult for them. My students' communication skills and thinking skills immediately increase when they are provided with visual supports!
I am asking for a printer so that I can create visual supports that enhance my students' learning, regardless of their cognitive level. Some of my students use communication books with picture symbols so that they have visuals to point to in order to make choices and make themselves understood throughout the school day. Many of my other students have difficulty recalling details and answering questions; but when provided with visual supports, abstract thinking becomes more concrete, and they feel successful! My students use graphic organizers to increase summarization skills when they read books and news articles.
By supporting this project, you are giving my students the visual supports to feel understood, to help them understand and learn more, and to help them feel successful academically.
They deserve to have access to these visual supports at all times, and these materials will allow them to think and communicate at their highest potential.
