This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students here at SMBMS are a part of a budding initiative to turn the school around both academically and socially by promoting literacy, excellence in standards-based extracurricular activities, and community involvement. We are a Title I urban neighborhood school located in the historical Medgar Evers Community here in Jackson, Mississippi. The students who attend the school are in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Our students come from diverse backgrounds with a variety of talents and abilities, which can be honed through academic preparation. As we see increases in reading performance, our goal of performing proficiently and advancing in all academic subjects can be met.
My Project
I service students who need support with academic, social, emotional, and behavioral skillsl; with this, they are lacking in their reading skills. It is very challenging to try to teach children to increase their reading levels when they have so many other things that have become a hindrance to them. These children need so many resources that are not provided by the school district to help them increase their reading levels. As a low-paid teacher, it is impossible for me to afford the materials that i need to help these babies get ahead. They are required to take the same tests that the general education children have to take but yet they are not at the same level as the general education children. These resources will help tremendously.
