Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you know that only 20% of ELL students go on to graduate from high school? Well, the sad truth is that many of them never get the love for learning and do not develop the reading skills well enough to feel successful.
My students come from a low income neighborhood where many parents do not speak English or cannot read.
School is often the only place where students can feel successful and get help with basic skills. Most of my students come to kindergarten not knowing any letters or numbers. The sad reality is that 40% of them will be recommended for retention because they are not getting the help they need at home. And 1/2 day kindergarten is not enough for these kids.
My Project
So in order to use my time in the classroom to the fullest I am requesting materials to help them succeed. I am requesting sets of books to go along with the cd books we currently have. These books inspire my students to learn to read. It helps them to hear a good reader's voice and be able to follow along while the reader is reading. I am also requesting labels to put the high frequency words on. They will wear these words around the entire school day and use this word as often as they can. Then when they get home, their parents can also use the word written right on their shirt. I am also requesting some science activity centers to get the students more engaged in science with hands-on activities. The 5 senses activity kit and library will help to enhance the learning of the 5 senses. The kit will work as a center activity with the follow up of the library books that will also enhance their experience.
I know that my students need to be engaged at all times in the classroom and that is why I am asking for your help.
