Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Would you want your child to have access to current resources and technology? Imagine as you walk into the classroom,you see the computer is setup to play a math game. You are excited and ready to start playing,but the computer fails to work. What a disappointment!!!
There are about 700 students at my K-5 elementary school in South Gate.
The majority of the children are Hispanic and English Language Learners. The children come from low income families that are struggling financially. Most of the children qualify for free or reduced lunch. In my second grade class, I have a diverse group of children. Some of my students have special needs or are being raised by grandparents. A majority of students come from one parent families,who work late hours and have little time to spend with their children.
My Project
The computers in my classroom are obsolete and don't always work. To increase student achievement our school has purchased various on-line computer programs. Our new reading series provides on-line reading,testing and researching. Accelerated reading,a supplemental reading program,encourages children to read books,and then on the computer they take a comprehension test . Our math series and a remedial math program have on-line games, activities, and reteaching lessons which have significantly increased students' skills. The majority of my students do not have computers at home to access these programs and some programs can only be accessed at school. In the classroom, I have a limited amount of old computers. My 26 students have a short amount of time if any on a computer,or must wait for an available computer. At times, these computers are not working. The children enjoy and learn so much with computers. The parents and I can see the progress of these children.
Please help us get one laptop computer.
I need one reliable computer that we can use for lessons and learning activities. Help me make learning fun! The children are eager to learn on the computer,but I need workable computers.
