Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our desks just won't stay put! They are constantly sliding out of place and make it hard to move about the rows. Some of our other supplies are getting old and worn out, too!
My students come from a very low income neighborhood in Northern California.
They face all the problems associated with living in poverty from run down and polluted neighborhoods and gang violence to unsafe play areas and limited access to technology and other life enriching experiences. Still, they remain a wonderful group of children who come to school every day excited and ready to work hard and learn. For many of them school is the safest place for them to play, socialize, express themselves and become brilliant thinkers. And while our school remains a little oasis of peace and safety in an otherwise troubled area, we still have struggles to get basic supplies, let alone the types of materials that enrich the learning days for our students.
My Project
I am requesting an assortment of items that will improve our classroom environment and enrich the learning of my students. I have tried many different ways to keep our desks from sliding around the room and nothing else works. So I am requesting non-skid rubber tips to put on the feet of all the desks so our rows stay straight and our walkways stay free of obstructions. I have also requested a "Queen" puppet. We use puppets frequently as part of our reading program, but I currently only have male characters. I want to add a female character and since I have a king it seemed a fitting choice. I have included several Leapfrog Leapster games because they are fantastic and the children love them and learn from them, but I only have one so far. I requested some new dry-erase markers because we use them a lot and they run out quickly. I also added a lock so I can secure all of the wonderful donations I receive through DonorsChoose.
It really is the little things that make our learning days go more smoothly and enrich our lessons.
These items will help keep our room orderly, interesting and engaging and protect the investments so many generous people have made in the education of my students. The difference your generosity makes in the lives of these children is huge, beyond measure.
