Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach science and health to 150 brilliant, diverse, curious, talented and challenging 8th graders in a mid-sized school located in an economically depressed inner-city community.
This community is plagued by gang violence, drug sales and abuse and extreme poverty. Most of my students live in this neighborhood, which is to say that they, as well, come from impoverished homes. Some do not have a "home" at all, but rather live in shelters. In fact, the poverty is so pervasive that 100% of my students qualify for free meals at school.
Due to recent budget cuts, the science department has not been able to supply many basic materials and pieces of equipment to my classroom. My students and I are constantly struggling to make do, either with equipment that is no longer operational or that is in too short supply for the number of students in the classroom.
All eighth graders are required to take The New York State Intermediate Science Exam, a two-part test that assesses both the students' skills and knowledge in the sciences. The practical, or hands-on portion of the test requires that students demonstrate their ability to calculate the mass and volume of several objects. Throughout the year, the students should have multiple opportunities to practice this skill, so that they may perform well on test day. However, there are currently not enough functioning triple beam balances to facilitate such activities.
Of course, practice makes perfect, and if provided the equipment necessary to hone these skills, I believe that my students are destined to succeed.
I know that each and every one of my students has the ability to perform well in my classroom, and beyond. My students, although insightful, inventive, and enterprising, need a lot of support. In a community devastated by poverty, an excellent education offers the best means for children to reach their potential. Myself, and my colleagues, make it our mission to offer everything that we can that will ensure their success; both in the classroom and in their futures.
I am writing this proposal today to request the generosity of a much-needed and much-appreciated donation of four Carolina Triple Beam Balances, so that my students are confident and prepared to demonstrate their skill on the state exams.
