Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My fourth graders deserve access to a variety of high quality books. The books asked for in this grant proposal are all award winning themselves or are written by award winning authors.

I have 24 Mexican-American fourth graders in my bilingual classroom.

Most of their families recently immigrated to Chicago from Mexico. They came here so that their children would have more educational opportunities than they had in Mexico. Many of my students are reading at a second grade reading level. It is essential that they have access to good books to facilitate their love of reading and thus help them transition from learning to read to reading to learn.

My Project

All of the books being requested are award winning books themselves or written by award winning authors. The majority of the books are John Newbery Medal, Pura Belpre, and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award winners. The John Newbery Medal goes to the author of the most distinguished American novel for children. Pura Belpre is given to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience. The Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award is presented to an illustrator of African descent whose inspiring books best promote an understanding of the American Dream.

Children can do amazing things when they have the necessary drive and support.

It is my job to get students to want to read and give them the tools necessary to be successful readers. Children will like to read when they have quality books readily available. Your donation to this project will make a huge difference in my students' lives because it will ensure them access to award-winning books.
