Every week my Clark Street Elementary Art Stars come into my studio ready to wow the world with their awesome creations. As the school's fine arts teacher, I'm proud to say this is the first year we have an art studio - an exterior trailer with broken windows, few supplies and no sink for washing up. This studio is used by about 200 young Art Stars every week, ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. In class we focus on art history, research and the development of technical skill in the areas of drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and more. As you can imagine, this can get quite messy! Most of my students come from low-income families who cannot afford to simply buy new clothes if the ones they're wearing become soiled. It is nearly impossible to conduct a painting workshop without making a mess, so we've made a compromise; the students wear trash bags with holes cut out for the head and arms. These get the job done in the crudest fashion, but they are noisy, cumbersome and embarrassing for some of the students. I think that it would do much to improve the studio environment if my Art Stars had smocks. These would help them concentrate on their work without worrying about soiling their clothes or being distracted by the annoying crackle of the trash bags. I strongly believe that a fine arts program helps students develop confidence, creativity and fine motor skills that carry over to other subjects and areas of their lives. Helping my Art Stars out with new smocks would be one enormous step toward building a safe, clean, welcoming studio environment where all budding artists can shine.
