My Students

I teach 9th grade algebra in Oakland, California. My students come from diverse ethnic, economic and cultural backgrounds. And, yet, they never cease to impress me with their ability to work together and their desire to help each other out! They are extremely bright and curious about the world around them. I feel very lucky to be their teacher.

My Project

Calculators are a very important for our math class. First, calculators help all students access the content we are working on at the moment, even if they are not fast or fluent at arithmetic. Second, calculators help students see number relationships that they won't be able to calculate by hand, such as square or cube roots. Finally, having a class set of calculators helps students not have to use their phones in order to calculate, which can be both distracting and not as functional as a scientific calculator.

These specific calculators have been highly recommended by the other teachers in the 9th grade algebra team.

We need one for each student, and my largest class has 33.
