My math class is about "embracing the struggle" of learning. I try to instill a growth mindset with my students that enables them to become complex thinkers that aren't afraid to try something new that may be difficult at first. Embracing the struggle is embracing the learning process.
TBA serves Boston's Dorchester neighborhood.
Students come from mostly African-American descent and generally endure many struggles and obstacles just to get to school each day. Most of my students come from broken homes, live well below the poverty line and have a myriad of learning and/or emotional disabilities. Education is often not their only focus, as many have to work to help support their families. My kids are amazing, through all of the these perceived societal roadblocks they persevere. Nothing is more fulfilling than watching some of my students come into my class in the fall with serious math phobias, only to leave in the summer looking forward to next year's math class.
My classroom uses technology to engage my students as they learn Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus & Financial Literacy. There are many online resources available (like Khan Academy, IXL, LearnZillion, etc.) that enable students to practice these skills with the level of rigor required to master them. These resources are great because they allow students to work at their own pace, rewarding stronger students with extra rigor & not penalizing struggling students with the pressure to keep up with the rest of class. I love using these resources, but they involve video tutorials which require headphones. The headphones I'm requesting will help my students during these self directed learning sessions. In addition, they also can be rewarded with time to listen to music while they work as a classroom incentive.
Integration of technology into the classroom is easier now than ever before.
With your support, I hope to continue to engage my students in new ways. Studies show that headphones can help students with attention disorders to be more productive. This will be especially helpful during classwork sessions.
