My Students

My math class is about "embracing the struggle" of learning. I try to instill a growth mindset with my students that enables them to become complex thinkers who aren't afraid to try something new that may be difficult at first. Embracing the struggle is embracing the learning process.

Our school serves Boston's Dorchester neighborhood.

Students come from mostly African-American descent and generally endure many struggles and obstacles just to get to school each day. Most of my students come from broken homes, live well below the poverty line, and have a myriad of learning and/or emotional disabilities. Education is often not their only focus, as many have to work to help support their families. My kids are amazing, through all of these perceived societal roadblocks they persevere. Nothing is more fulfilling than watching some of my students come into my class in the fall with serious math phobias, only to leave in the summer looking forward to next year's math class.

My Project

Our students are always looking for more ways to interact with class lessons. I currently have a smart projector that I use to teach my class lessons each day, our students really like getting up and using the projector at the front of the class. My goal is to use the Mac Mini next to the projector so that everything is self-contained on the wall. This would essentially transform the wall into 5' x 8' touchscreen projected computer.

Our students really love using technology to engage in lessons.

Some enjoy going upfront and engaging with projected lessons, others would rather participate from their seats. Having a wireless keyboard, mouse and trackpad in concert with the Mac Mini would allow for access to a variety of learning styles.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, our students have been able to use tablets or chromebooks to do classwork either from home or in class. This new Mac Mini will enable me to do some really fun lessons with them. The Mac Mini can easily project what students are doing on their laptops, so they can share at the front of the class from their seat, or at home (some students are learning from home during their covid-19 quarantine). This upgrade in technology will allow all of my students to access class from wherever they are located.

Each of my four classes includes both students with various learning disabilities and social/emotional disabilities. Being able to meet the diverse needs of all students would really allow for them to be more of a part of our exciting daily lessons. Creating a classroom where all students are included each day is paramount to a successful learning experience.
