Help Motivated Students Succeed in a College Level Course
My students need supplemental reading materials to prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam. This would provide for one class set of a supplemental text for 40 kids.
I teach an advanced placement class in U.S. History. Students challenge themselves to take a college level course in high school. Most are 16 years old. While this may not be a group/population that may usually qualify or draw the appeal of "disadvantaged" in the typical sense, the kids are highly motivated to challenge themselves and make the most of their education. My goal for them is to be critical thinkers and productive members of our society and community. Many are stressed and overworked with the number of commitments they have both in school and out.
"Only those who dare to fail greatly, can ever achieve greatly." Robert f Kennedy
I am drawn to this quote because it applies to so many of my students. They are afraid to fail, but often, when they take their first advanced placement class, they do fail, because it is harder than anything they have taken before. (I mean, imagine a 16-year-old in a university, of course, they will struggle...at first). I really want to be able to help them be the best they can be and achieve their full potential, while still having the time and energy to be kids.
My Project
Many students have difficulty reading at the college level. Amsco, US History, Preparing for the AP exam is a supplemental textbook/resource that provides help and resources to support students. By providing them with the resources to supplement the textbook, they have a better chance of understanding the material. This text also provides test prep and support for students that want to challenge themselves, and prepare for college, but find themselves at a disadvantage skill wise. By using this book along with their textbook, I am hoping to provide students with the support they need to be successful in learning the skills they need to enter college.
College is so competitive, and we need to provide motivated students with the tools they need to be successful.
