I am a second-year teacher, and I teach first grade at P.S. 326 in Brooklyn. Over 70 percent of the children in my school receive free or reduced-price lunch. There is also a high population of students in the English as a Second Language program. P.S. 326 is a small school that includes pre-kindergarten through first grade. Since it is a smaller school, the budget is also smaller than the budgets of larger schools.
I currently have twenty-one students in my classroom, and they are all at different academic levels. My students have done a great job this year and they have come a long way but we still have a lot of work to do. One skill that my students still need to work on is writing. We write everyday and they are becoming more confident writers, yet I still struggle to keep them motivated. I like to give them many choices when they are writing and I want them to enjoy writing. I would love to provide them with new materials to keep them motivated for the rest of the school year.
There are so many great activities out there and I would like to bring some of them into the classroom. One of these activities is clipboard writing. This allows students to use dry erase markers (which they love) and comes with cards that contain simple questions that students can answer. I would also like to have various posters and books that the students can write on. They would be able to build their writing skills while they complete “all about me” posters and get excited to have their own blank hardcover books to write in. I would love to also get colored pencils for them to write with. They get excited to use anything other than pencils!!! We could also use an electric pencil sharpener. This would save precious writing time.
