I teach in a public school on a military base in South Carolina. Our student body consists of military children, as well as children in low income families that have chosen to send their children to our school due to our status as a "Choice School" under NCLB (No Child Left Behind). We are considered a "High Poverty" school due to the fact that the majority of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
These children are left with one parent at home, as well as the financial situation of many families having both parents working many hours.
Several students' families are strained for not only money, but time. This affects the students academically. Our parents sacrifice so much for their children and for our country. I feel indebted to them and feel it is my duty to serve them to the best of my ability.
My Project
The Social Studies hands on activities, reader's theater supplies, and trade books will make this topic more interesting and enjoyable for my students, resulting in more student engagement and understanding of these concepts. This will truly make history come alive for my students in an exciting, active environment. In addition, the activities will increase students exposure to literacy in other subject areas. You will take part in instilling an appreciation of history and a permanent understanding of our heritage, while making a "boring" subject FUN!
Please consider donating to this cause.
My students this year, next year, and for many years to come will truly benefit from having these social studies supplies in my classroom. This is something that I personally cannot afford to do on my own. With your help, I will be better equipped to do my job, one I love, and I will be extremely grateful...as will my students. Thank you for your consideration.
