My innovative, curious, passionate and enthusiastic seventh graders soar when they are in their comfort zone. Creating a safe, engaging and comfortable academic space for students to read and write has been my goal since day 1 of my teaching career (I am approaching year 3).
Integrating flexible seating in the upper middle school classroom has been a learning experience and has gone tremendously well over the past few years.
My students become excited to read and learn in their "smart spots".... all because of a few pieces of furniture I've collected over the years.
Students' engagement, passion for reading and meaningful discussion with their peers excel when they are comfortable and able to remain focused because of their seating.
However, it is expensive to provide students with durable, flexible seating and enough flexible seating for more than a small group. Stools have broken, bean bags have lost their beans and rugs have become too worn out to keep in the classroom.
Any donation you can make would be appreciated by not only myself but all my excited new seventh graders!
My Project
Yoga stability balls drastically help students who struggle sitting still stay focused on their work instead of fidgeting around! Floor cushions help students while choosing a 'smart spot' for independent reading around the classroom!
Independent reading is a vital concept I try to integrate into my classroom...students are able to choose a 'smart spot' where ever they would like and read a book of choice to encourage a love for reading.
This project would drastically improve my students engagement and focus for reading!
I currently have one bean bag in my classroom that was actually from my parent's basement. The bag is over twenty years old and is currently held together with duct tape with beans falling out....still doesn't stop it from being a fan-favorite during independent work time but new chairs would definitely be a hit!
Yoga mats were actually a student suggestion! This particular student was considered an "at-risk" student who mentioned how helpful being able to lay and use the seat cushions in my classroom to read helped him finish an entire book. He suggested yoga mats for students to use on the tile floor.
Body/Floor Pillows were another student suggestion. One of my "high-achieving" students suggested getting a body pillow so she could prop it against the wall to enjoy her independent reading book every Friday!
