Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at the only middle school in a rural school district are hard working and eager to succeed. Most of the students come from low-income homes and don't have access to enrichment activities outside of school.
The students need opportunities with building blocks and Snap Circuits to explore, create, feel successful, and develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.
The library is a hub at our school. Many students that are struggling in school, come in looking for ways to use their hands and creativity. They especially love building things, both with blocks and we have found they love the Snap Circuits. This is a win-win because they are learning to problem solve, and feel successful. There are approx. 1800 students at our school and we have only one set of two dimensional building blocks and two Snap Circuit sets. So right now, students have to wait a long time to get a turn.
My Project
Currently, the students look forward to coming to the library to do something a bit different with their day. Especially if they're struggling in school, working with their hands is a welcome creative outlet. As we only have a couple of sets right now, the students often have to wait to get a turn.
Both the Magna-Tiles and Snap Circuits help students think critically, solve problems and use their creativity.
They are eager to feel successful, and love the feeling of solving problems, creating something concrete, and learn experientially. It is amazing to see the way students have learned to work co-operatively with each other along with the other skills they are learning while working with these apparatus.
