Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I feel very privileged to work at an IB dual language school in Houston, but as I have come to realize, challenges exist. I have found that half of my students are below their grade reading level and that their math proficiency is one to two grade levels behind. I am fortunate to have a nice blend of socioeconomic students, but my concern still lies heavy on helping my at-risk students to become academic overachievers.
My goal with this project is to obtain the tools that will allow me to strengthen their literacy skills.
Currently, I am at a disadvantage not having an appropriate tool that allows me to efficiently engage my students in whole group writing activities. My hopes are to improve the delivery of my instruction while increasing proficiency in their target language. I hope that by providing effective classroom resources, I will be able to tend to the needs of all my students.
My Project
In order to increase my efficacy in checking for student understanding, I have noticed that I am lacking an easy tool that provides instant feedback. In the past, I would utilize dry erase boards as a quick and easy method of engaging students to provide answers to any quick questions during a lesson. I feel that I have fallen down in this area, particularly due to the lack of sufficient boards and the lack of erasers.
By reaching out to the generous citizens of DonorsChoose, I am hoping to receive a class set of dry erase boards and erasers that will provide more engagement in my lessons.
My hopes are to have these at their desks at all times and to incorporate their use every day in order to gauge their understanding of concepts and skills taught during instruction. Because of district-wide budget cuts due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey, I have not been able to request these simple tools.
As we approach the end of the first half of the school year, I am beginning to realize that the lack of these dry erase boards has taken a toll on my students' engagement and learning. With your generosity, I will be able to immediately begin the implementation of this tool. It's not too late to turn this academic school year around in time to prepare my kids for the state exams. With your help, my students will excel!
