This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am currently the proud teacher of 27 little kindergarten students who love to listen to stories. These future little readers come from low income homes and a strict school budget. The students all receive reduced/free lunch.
Our classroom library is a mess. We are lacking an area where we can have a wonderful shared reading experience. We are grateful for the rug we have and for the donated books but we require a little more to make our reading center more inviting and exciting.
We would like to have "lots and lots of books" as my students put it. My students constantly ask me to read them books. Most of my students do not own any books at home and they truly cherish the books we have at school. I have purchased books to add to our classroom library but we need so many more. I would love to expose my students to a variety of literature that I hope to someday make a part of our classroom library.
We would also enjoy having a reading easel to hold and store our big books during shared reading. Our current easel is a painting easel that does not do a very good job holding our books. We make the best of what we have.
My primary goal is to create a classroom filled with a variety of literature and a cozy place to have wonderful shared reading experiences the children will always remember. They are truly wonderful students who deserve having their early learning reading experiences be enjoyable. I want to see their imaginations grow with every new book we read.
