Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As David Warlick said best, "We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher's hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world."
The students in my classroom are enthusiastic learners who are eagerly excited about the opportunities a quality education can provide them.
The district's students come from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds. About 87% of students are English language learners, most of whom speak Spanish. Students in this school face daily struggles the typical child should never have to encounter during their childhood years. Despite the obstacles these students face day-to-day, they come to school each day with a smile on their face, ready to learn and explore the world using the resources our classroom provides them.
My Project
If you have never taught before it is hard to imagine the amount of paper that can be wasted providing students with quality guided reading instruction. With such limited resources, my goal with this project is to provide students with unlimited opportunities to access literacy through ipads, while saving our environment at the same time. I currently use a well known online curriculum called A-Z Reading. This site provides students with access to more than 2,500 downloadable books. With this many books students are able to read successfully at an instructional level and truly make progress in their reading. However, think about how much valuable time and paper is wasted everyday to produce these books. Most importantly, students are not being provided access to authentic text with real colored pictures. Providing students with ipads during guided reading instruction will allow a small group of students to read the same book, reduce paper usage, and most of all help them learn to read!
Guided reading allows teachers to provide their students with the guidance they need to become proficient readers.
With access to more than 2,500 downloadable books, guided reading would be much easier with the technology of ipads. Each student (2 to 5 in a group) will have access to the same book and an opportunity to interact with the text. An ipad will provide more access to comprehension skills and strategies than a plain black and white print off. This project will truly make a difference!
