This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our social studies are old and get hard for my students to read and comprehend. Our low-income school district does not have the money to replace them. We get three science "kits" per year and once those are completed the students do not have any other science materials provided by the district.
Many of my students live below the poverty level and therefore do not get a chance to leave their small community or experience things like zoos, museums, science centers, etc.
Scholastic News will help them see what is beyond their small community.
My Project
We will continue to use the materials our district has for us but Scholastic News will be a fun and insightful supplement to the curriculum. The students LOVE reading these but our district or myself just can't afford to purchase them. This will help raise my students interest in science and social studies and help them learn about the world around them.
Scholastic News will help my students reading skills.
It will also keep them up to date on current events and provide them with facts and information that they will not find in outdated text books. They will be engaged through the colorful pictures and text.
