This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Pre-K and Kindergarten students in a unique public Montessori school which recently opened in 2018. I marvel at my student's desire for knowledge. They devour learning like it’s cupcakes! They are in the beginning stages of reading and writing. Writing seems to be a calming, creative process for them. In fact, they would write uninterrupted for hours if allowed to.
My students are an inquisitive bunch.
They enjoy math, science, poetry, art, and crafting. Often, they can be found crafting things for each other, creating a spirit of kindness and community among themselves. It’s amazing to see the good-will expressed between them.
My Project
Nothing inspires a path of investigation for younger students more than a circle-time discussion about science and nature. Who wouldn’t want to know what the life cycle of a butterfly is, what baby chicks enjoy eating, or how tiny seeds turn into our lunch. Many researchers believe hands-on activities in the classroom increase student engagement and help students make connections to real-world situations. Life-cycle models are great hands-on materials to make that connection.
This project will give my students a chance to wonder, explore and experience life-like models of animals, plants and bug specimens and happily investigate worlds larger or smaller than their own.
