My students are from the Bronx. They face a number of challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Some of my students are bilingual, and ESL. Others have a range of reading levels. Many of them live in shelters. One thing that they have in common is they enjoy learning about the children and their daily lives. Reading as a whole class brings them together.
This curiosity that my students have about other children will push their thinking in a new direction.
Many of my students are bored with the books that are currently in my classroom library. Having access to a new book will open their minds to many possibilities and rich discussions in my classroom. I am looking forward to starting and ending the school year with a book that will teach them and show them that everyone has differences, but that those differences is what makes each of them unique.
My Project
These materials will support me and allow me to give my students the best chance at having a normal classroom in these unprecedented times. As a NYC teacher I was asked to bring my classroom home in short period of time and left many of the essentials back at school. Please help me try and recreate a learning space where my students can feel a little normalcy and a safe place to go to during the day. I will use these items for my think aloud in both reading and writing. Think aloud a allows me to show and demonstrate what I want the children to do.
