My fourth graders are amazing! They are a beautiful blend of many countries and cultures. Many of my students come from war-torn countries and are just looking to find peace. Their motivation amazes me as they strive to speak, read, and write proficiently in a language that is new to them. Listening to stories on CD will help them learn much faster.
The students in my classroom defy all odds as they not only learn to speak English as a second language, they learn to read, write, and solve complex math problems!
My fourth grade students come from all around the world. Many of my students have come from war-torn countries with families who seek a better life, and education, for their children. It is so amazing to watch my students quickly pick up on words and phrases within the English language! As they grow in their language development, my fourth graders are eager to learn to read and write. It is a tremendous challenge to address the needs of language learners at so many different levels of development, but I love it, and would not change a thing!
My Project
This year I was determined to give my language learners some independence during reading workshop by providing them audiobooks to listen and read along to. I purchased many books on cd for my listening center and was excited to get started. Unfortunately, we found that only one student was able to listen at a time with the materials that we have. My goal is to be able to provide at least 10 of my language learners a book, cd, and cd player to listen to each day during reading workshop. With these 10 portable cd players and 15 pairs of headphones, my students will be able to listen and read along with a book that is at their instructional level, building vocabulary and strengthening reading comprehension all throughout our reading workshop! I am also requesting 10 packs of rechargeable batteries to be used with the CD players.
Listening centers will help my language learners grow as readers by leaps and bounds!
They will have much needed exposure to new vocabulary and be able to stay engaged with a book that is at their level for the duration of the reading workshop. This will help them to quickly catch up to their English-speaking peers, while boosting their confidence in reading!
