Help me give my students updated pet books. We cleared out the old books and found a gold fish book from 1947! There was a special request for the Bearded Dragon book from a student.
Our students live in a small community outside of Anchorage. Our families work together, play together and support each other when help is needed. We have immediate access to the wilderness for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, boating, fishing and hunting.
I want to know more about... Many of our children today spend their time with activities that do not require any thinking on their part.
My students are hungry to explore the world around them--to wonder and ask questions, learn more about a variety of topics and to learn to solve problems. As our school moves towards becoming a STEAM school, I want to help our students to be more active in their learning through hands-on activities that include problem-solving.
My Project
What child does not want a pet? There are many picture books that involve a child wanting a pet or trying to decide which one to get. My favorite is Not Norman : a goldfish story by Kelly Bennett which I read to my students every year. After begging for a pet, the little boy gets a pet goldfish named Norman. He wants any pet but the fish and tries to return him.
Our nonfiction pet books are old and outdated; the goldfish book was from 1947!
Students often read stories about pets such as: What pet should I get? by Dr. Seuss, Prudence wants a pet by Cathleen Daly, and I wanna iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff, and then ask for a pet care book.
Student use the books to create a flip book about a pet of their choice--real or imaginary. After removing the very outdated books, we don't have many left!
