I currently teach an Autistic class in Wake county, North Carolina. I teach in a lower economic part of the county. I have eight students in grades kindergarten through second. Each of my students have unique needs and are on different academic levels.
I am not able to use standard textbooks and materials used in the regular education classes to teach them math. My students need more hands on activities and materials in order to learn. They all learn through "doing" and not "reading" or "lecturing". I do not have the correct materials to teach my students the best way possible. Materials that would be beneficial to them learning are: manipulative's, games, center materials, and hands on resources. I need a variety of materials to meet each of their needs.
All of my students would benefit from math materials. They would be able to use them at teacher time and independent work time. My biggest goal and hope for my students is to enhance their academic growth in order to function in the community the best way possible. I am hopeful that the math materials I need will benefit all of my students.
