Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Last year the music department was very concerned about a group of students that no one seemed able to reach. These kids are labeled "at-risk". They are discussed frequently in very negative terms, and many teachers throw their hands up in the air and say "I can't save everyone." Essentially, these students are tossed aside and many of them drop out. In the music department, we noticed that these students would actually skip class to gaze longingly in the music class before they were removed by a dean or assistant principal. Students would come by after school and say that they always wanted to learn guitar because they thought guitar was really cool. In response to these students, we have decided to launch a guitar program. Many of these students do not enjoy school due to the challenges of academic learning. If we give them a class they look forward to attending, we hope they have a better attitude towards school. We are currently planning curriculum based on our knowledge of our student's interests. We plan to teach guitar through the use of popular music, jazz, R&B, and Latin music. We are asking for a classroom set of 15 guitars. There is a great demand for these guitars and they will be used from school opening to closing. Thank you for listening to the needs of our students.
