The New York State education standards for middle school require students to read 25 books in one year. I hold tremendously high expectations for my scholars and have set a goal for them to read 50 books in one year. Last year I kicked off the Great Reading Marathon and was able to successfully motivate my students to read 10 books each in one month. With your help, this year the marathon will be even bigger. As a new year teacher, I am limited to the books that I inherited from other teachers and the ones that I picked up at stoop sales. While I have introduced my students to the library and begged and borrowed from other teachers, my library just isn't up to par when it comes to how hard my students are working. I need your help! I want to kick it off the SUPER READING MARATHON with a bang! Students will read 15 books each in three months! I want them to have enough books to keep them invested in that marathon goal. My 8th grade girls are reading almost a book a week and my seventh grade boys are incredibly motivated to read when I can find books that interest them. Help me maintain the feeling of achievement and success that my students have been feeling. Help me keep them invested in our goal. Help me inspire enthusiasm, initiative and a genuine love for reading that only comes from reading books you really, truly love. Help me help them.
