Help Me Inspire My ESL Students With Captivating Diverse Books
Help me give my students books with characters that look like them. I want them to see themselves in literature. Quality fiction and nonfiction titles will inspire my ESL students.
My English Language Learners come from many different cultural backgrounds. They speak many different languages at home. Each day they come into school ready to work hard and learn. They enjoy books and love listening to or telling stories.
My students are at a range of different language levels and they all love learning.
Speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English is their focus while they're in ESL class. Authentic and engaging literature is an important part of their learning.
My Project
The Red Pencil book set and the Rickshaw Girl book set will be used for novel studies. Each of these books has a significant setting, rich cultural connections, and strong characters. The books are filled with great vocabulary to learn and interesting cultural information.
These book titles focus on diversity.
I want my ESL students to have more exposure to characters that they can relate to and connect with. I want them to be inspired by people like Sonia Sotomayor, Nelson Mandela, and Kamala Harris. I want them to set high goals for themselves and reach these. My hope is to get more books into students' hands and build their excitement for reading.
